Sometimes. It depends on what is in your ducts. Heavy buildup, pests and debris blowing out of vents are good reasons to clean. A little dust usually is not.
When it is worth doing
- Ducts clogged with heavy dust and debris
- Particles coming out of your supply registers
- Rodents or insects in the ducts
- Substantial visible mold on hard surfaces (fix the moisture first)
- Construction dust after a remodel
When it may not be worth doing
The EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning, only cleaning as needed. It notes that dust on return registers is normal, and that research has not shown cleaning prevents health problems. Be careful of any company that promises it will.
Downsides to watch for
- Very low advertised prices that grow once the crew arrives
- Poor cleaning that stirs up dust instead of capturing it
- Pressure to add chemical treatments you do not understand
- Damage to old or fragile ducts if handled carelessly
How to decide
Take off a vent cover and shine a light inside. If you see heavy buildup, call for a cleaning quote. If you are not sure, book an air duct inspection first.
