If your clothes take more than one cycle to dry, check the vent before you replace the dryer. A clogged or crushed vent is a common cause, and lint buildup is also a fire risk.
What to look for
- Clothes take longer than usual to dry
- The dryer or laundry room gets very hot
- Little air comes out of the outside cap when the dryer is running
- Lint collects around the cap or behind the dryer
What to check first
- Clean the lint screen
- Pull the dryer out carefully and look for a crushed hose
- Check that the outside cap opens and is not blocked
When to stop using it
If you notice a burning smell, stop using the dryer and unplug it if it is safe to do so. Have it checked before running it again. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
When to call
If those checks do not solve it, book dryer vent cleaning or dryer vent repair.
